Second Grade

> 2012-2013 Tuition

Reading
Students are provided reading instruction and experiences that broaden and deepen the ability of students to know, comprehend, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate what they read. The lessons focus on scriptural applications that help build character and discernment, teach specific reading strategies and higher-level thinking skills, foster an appreciation for literature, and integrate reading with other subject areas.

Language Arts
The teaching of grammar is important to good writing, but good writing will not happen without specific instruction in the area of writing. It is for this reason, we provide a strong link between the two areas. Students are introduced to grammar lessons through listening, speaking, and critical thinking activities. They also have the opportunity use the grammar skills they are learning in a brief writing, listening, or speaking assignments. Students will also refine their writing skills through the Writing Process.

Mathematics
In second grade, students will be using Math Expressions. It focuses on core concepts to build in-depth understanding of major mathematical ideas. Students invent, question, and explore, but also learn and practice important math strategies.

Science
The F.O.S.S. (Full Option Science System) Science Kit is an interactive approach to teaching science. Students become real scientists by testing and experimenting with ideas and materials. In second grade, students become aware of the diversity of animal forms. Students investigate several insects by observing structures and behaviors, discussing their findings, and asking questions. They will also discover the global phenomena of objects in motion by constructing and observing toys that spin.

Social Studies
The Social Studies Curriculum for second grade focuses on “Our America” which explores the history of our flag, patriotic songs, and holidays. Students learn the contributions to the American heritage made by the Pilgrims, American Indians, early colonists, pioneers, cowboys, and immigrants. Geography is interwoven in all the lessons.
